Something new from us–and what will hopefully become a regular feature!

1) This is what I’m currently reading:

No Meat Athlete by Matt Frazier. One of my goals for 2014 is to eat more cleanly, and as I mentioned I was contemplating going vegetarian. For almost two weeks now, I’ve gone without eating meat, eggs, and dairy. It really has been dare I say….easy?? Despite the no-eggs no-dairy, I’d hesitate to say I’ve gone vegan. I’m not going to analyze every package or wrapper to see if there’s hidden dairy in there. Honestly I just don’t have the time or desire to do that. Maybe that’s lazy or non-committal. For example, I shared an appetizer with a friend and there was feta in it but I still had a couple bites. A minor “cheat” that I’m not going to obsess over. It’s also a fair assumption that the vegetable soup I ordered at another restaurant was made with beef broth. We live in a small town where options are limited. I can pretty much guarantee I would not be able to order a 100% vegan meal at any local restaurant unless it was a plain salad. But that’s ok. I refuse to be one of those “difficult” people in restaurants. For me, it’s about the bigger picture. So for the meantime, I’m just cutting out what I would call “obvious” animal products, 99% of the time. And that is good enough for me. And so far so good–I’m feeling better about what I’ve been eating–if anything it’s kept me from stealing bites of mac and cheese, scraping extra cheese off pizza (have I mentioned my cheese addiction?), and eating most desserts. I don’t feel like it has affected my running negatively at all–and I’m currently running in the mid-40 miles per week range. Well, that kind of turned into a long story. Bottom line–great book if you’re thinking along these lines.

2) Breaking Bad

Holy. Crap. Is it an over-exaggeration to say that this is quite possibly THE best series I’ve EVER watched? I think not. And yes, I’m well aware that it’s also quite possible that I’m the last person in America to see it. But….I am hooked. Hahahaha. I only let myself watch it while I treadmill run, so it’s a win-win. I’m already dreading the end of the series. Really it just needs to go on forever.

3) This article from Competitor Running entitled “Running Faster Is Not Always Better“. An excellent article explaining the purpose and sequencing of each type of training run within a well-written plan, and most importantly, the science behind why it isn’t necessarily better to run faster just because you can. Wow, did I struggle with this one. Like REALLY struggled. This is how I trained for MCM, and I know if left to my own devices, I would not have raced as well as I had. It took my poor coach approximately four months to get this through to me, but I’m now a firm believer.

4) The Bestowed Box

It is a subscription box of healthy foods and snacks. It is also like Christmas every month. Well worth the $19 per month, as it comes jam-packed! If you find something you love that you cannot find locally, it’ll link you to where you can get it.

5) Last but not least, something fun. This one I have Kelly to thank for. Tarte mascara.

And just like the box claims–

I do in fact believe it delivers in the 752% volume increase department. Trust me, I am all about makeup shortcuts. Kelly said they have waterproof also–perfect, as I am one of those people who runs wearing mascara. #trueconfessions
