Hello, Taper!

And here I am….having arrived safely and intact at the taper. I can’t believe it’s here already.

Love it or hate it–I’m not yet sure how I’m going to feel about it this time around. This is hands down, without a doubt the hardest training cycle I’ve ever completed. My body is TIRED. My mind is tired too. It’s been four months of juggling so many things in my life around running. I honestly feel ready for the break. I guess we shall see.

The first of my three weeks of tapering:

Monday: Was supposed to be a hill repeat workout, but in light of the 22-mile marathon pace run two days prior, we switched this run to Wednesday. Which was a good thing because I would NOT have been up for it. My legs were very sore and I was definitely feeling it after Saturday. 7 very easy treadmill miles in 1:08:20.

Wednesday: Last hill repeat workout of the training plan! 1M WU; 6xHR; CD for a total of 7 miles in 1:06:07.

Thursday: 5 treadmill miles in 46:15.

What the *bleep* am I going to do now? I now have Extra Time–two words I haven’t been acquainted with in a while. I do know I will need to keep myself mentally busy in an attempt to avoid the “freak out”.

I’m going to make a valiant effort to eat as cleanly and smartly as possible the next three weeks. Although my goal was to have abs like this prior to the marathon–

that didn’t quite happen. But hey, who doesn’t shoot a bow and arrow in dance clothes?

I’m also doing some long-overdue closet cleaning and organizing (thanks for the inspiration, Teresa!).

Number One child down with a cold. Note the sleep mask and giant box of tissues. Do I just go ahead and try to catch this cold now and be done with it? Fortunately it was short-lived and no one else has gotten it so far!

Saturday: Solo long run on the trail. M1-6 @9:15 pace; M7-16 @MP. This was really the last “bigger” mileage training run. I was looking at it all week as “just 16”, but I will tell you it was not “just” anything and I worked for a fair chunk of it. And I was just so physically exhausted afterward. I know it’s all catching up with me. I ran the first six miles a little too fast and was reminded–one of these days I’ll finally get this–that I’ve got to keep things slow that are supposed to be slow–and at this point, the slower the better. 16 miles in 2:17:54.

Sunday: 5 recovery treadmill miles in 50:04.


40 miles total for the week.
